Toby was the project architect for The Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience which opened in 2018. The scheme, which reveals the processes of whisky production whilst remaining sensitive to the surrounding countryside, won the RIAS Doolan Award in 2019 and was a finalist for the RIBA Stirling Prize.
Toby has worked on a variety of projects at different stages, including a number of design competitions, one of which was the winning entry for Merano, a residential development on London’s Albert Embankment which won both the RIBA London and National Award in 2019.
He has extensive on-site experience, starting his career on Terminal 5, Heathrow where he was based within site offices alongside the full range of project consultants. He spent three years on the detailed design and construction stages of Tower Bridge House, an office building in London overlooking the Tower of London, where he was resident architect on site.
Toby played a leading role on the One Hyde Park residential project in Knightsbridge, London from its inception in 2005 to its completion in 2011. He led on the full design development for the facades systems, working closely with planners and manufacturers to develop a system which is structurally efficient, performs exceptionally in terms of energy and privacy and responds sensitively to the context of the Knightsbridge conservation area.
Currently, Toby is working on Horse Soldier Farms, a 227-acre masterplan in Kentucky, USA. At the heart of the site is a bourbon distillery and production facility, which, combined with a retail park, chapel, event centre, equestrian centre, community rooms, and health and wellness opportunities, will welcome an estimated 200,000 annual visitors.
