Presented live to a panel of judges, Regent’s View was chosen as the winner from 15 shortlisted projects from around the world.
The WAF Awards are a celebration of architectural brilliance, offering winners the special opportunity to be recognised on a global stage.
The judging process is unique in that it is peer-based, comprising of some of the world's most respected architects, designers, and industry leaders.
Tracy Meller, Senior Director, RSHP:
"We are delighted to win the WAF Future Project Residential Award for this exciting scheme, which will regenerate a previously inaccessible corner of Bethnal Green and breathe new life into a section of the Regents Canal walkway that has been closed for over 100 years. Delivering over 550 new homes on a brownfield site, this project raises the bar for gasholder re-development, demonstrating what can be achieved with good design and a client’s commitment to delivering quality."
Graham Stirk, Senior Director, RSHP: “I’m delighted our design for Regent’s View has been recognised by WAF. Our proposal celebrates the historical industrial heritage of the site. The importance of preserving the historic gasholder frames is that they justify a particular form of urbanism that is not the norm. This approach is reinforced by using an industrial architectural vocabulary that will define a unique urban and architectural place to live and enjoy.”
Jack Evans-Newton, Associate Partner, RSHP: “I am thrilled that Regent’s View is a WAF winner, a development on a historic gasholder site in Bethnal Green, East London. The buildings echo the original gas storage tanks, with the existing gasholders frames as dominant features that will continue to define the area’s industrial heritage.
Historic footprints guide the placement of buildings, set within a 0.6-hectare public space featuring parkland, gardens, play spaces, and open embankment areas. New cafes, affordable workspaces, and leisure spots at ground level, aim to foster a vibrant community for Regent’s View and nearby Bethnal Green."
Dean Summers, Divisional Managing Director at St William: “Regent’s View brings together inspired design, thoughtful architecture, and a deep appreciation for two incredible Victorian gasholders. The exceptional design will transform this derelict brownfield site into a welcoming and truly unique part of London, delivering hundreds of private and affordable homes where they are needed most.
“Finding innovative solutions for the most complex urban sites is what St William and Berkeley Group are all about and we're delighted that Regent’s View has been named the world’s Best Future Residential Project at the World Architecture Festival. A huge thank you to RSHP and our fantastic partners at Historic England, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Gateway Housing Association.”
