On Tuesday, 26th November, Tracy Meller, Maurice Brennan, Jack Evans-Newton, and Graham Stirk attended the topping out ceremony for the first of five buildings at Regent’s View Bethnal Green, London.
This structural milestone is an exciting step in our journey with St. William (Berkeley Group) to transform a brownfield site into 550 new homes, regenerating a previously inaccessible corner of Bethnal Green.
Speaking about how the gasholder re-development will define the local area, Jack Evans-Newton, Associate Partner, and project lead, said that:
“The buildings echo the original gas storage tanks, with the existing gasholders frames as dominant features that will continue to define the area’s industrial heritage. Historic footprints guide the placement of buildings, set within a 0.6-hectare public space featuring parkland, gardens, play spaces, and open embankment areas."
New cafes, affordable workspaces, and leisure spots at ground level, aim to foster a vibrant community for Regent’s View and nearby Bethnal Green.”
The scheme comprises 5 faceted buildings ranging from 6 to 13 storeys, which, in addition to the high-quality new homes, will provide 4,182sqm of flexible non-residential floorspace. Gasholders no.2 and no.5 will be dismantled, refurbished, and reinstated to create a strong architectural narrative driven by an understanding of the industrial heritage of the site.
Regents View, along with Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks, is RSHP’s second London gasholder development in collaboration with St. William.
