Melbourne Metro Tunnel shortlisted for four AIA architecture awards

We're proud to share that the Metro Tunnel Project in Melbourne has been shortlisted across four categories in the Victorian Chapter Awards of the 2026 National Architecture Awards Program, presented by the Australian Institute of Architecture:

Public Architecture

The five new metro stations are complemented by over 16,500 sqm of new and upgraded public space, including plazas, streetscape improvements, and enhanced pedestrian and cycling connections.

By moving beyond conventional transport infrastructure, the stations create a generous and distinctly Melbourne experience, seamlessly integrating the transit network into the city’s everyday public life.

Urban Design

The line-wide approach is conceived as an 'open metro', positioning the stations as natural extensions of the city. This strategy strengthens connections between transport infrastructure and the public realm, improving legibility and ease of movement.

Across all stations, natural light, ventilation, and clear wayfinding are consistently integrated. At ground level, the design reinforces links between key precincts and enhances the walkability of central Melbourne.

Sustainable Architecture

All five stations have achieved 6-Star Green Star Design ratings, with the project also targeting a minimum “Excellent” rating under the Infrastructure Sustainability Design and As-Built scheme.

Passive design strategies such as maximising daylight and natural ventilation reduce operational energy demand, while durable materials support long-term performance. At a network scale, the project enables a significant shift toward low-carbon public transport.

Melbourne Prize

The Metro Tunnel Project demonstrates the role infrastructure can play in shaping the broader life of a city. By improving connectivity, enhancing public space, and supporting long-term sustainability, it contributes to Melbourne’s liveability for decades to come.

Long-term resilience has guided the design from the outset, with provisions for future patronage growth, evolving technologies, and changing climate conditions. 

The project aligns transport investment with architectural quality, urban regeneration, and environmental responsibility. It delivers functional efficiency, enriched public spaces, and a lasting, high-quality legacy for the city.

The Metro Tunnel Project in Melbourne sets a national benchmark for architecturally led, environmentally responsible transport infrastructure, recognised across these four categories in the prestigious National Architecture Awards.

The design for the stations is the result of a world-class collaboration between Hassell, WW+P and RSHP, delivered as part of the CYP Design & Construction Joint Venture.
