Bromley-by-Bow wins Planning Permission of the Year

We’re proud to share that Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks has won Planning Permission of the Year at the 2026 Planning Awards.
Developed by St William Homes LLP, the project was granted planning approval in July 2024. The scheme was praised by the judges for its truly collaborative approach between RSHP, St William, London Borough of Newham, Greater London Authority, and Historic England, leading to a "masterplan of the highest quality built on the site’s historic legacy."
RSHP’s design for the 23 acres Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks site – dating back to the 1870s and home of the largest collection of Victorian gasholders anywhere in the world – unlocks one of the most technically complex regeneration areas in the Lower Lea Valley, historically one of the most fractured parts of London with the site itself being isolated and inaccessible to public use for over 150 years.
The project will deliver 2,150 new homes, with 70% open space, including a 4.2-acre park fronting the River Lea.
It will also generate approximately 200 jobs and offer opportunities for skills development and training for local residents in Newham.
The refurbishment of seven Grade II listed gasholder frames ensures the site's extraordinary industrial heritage is preserved and celebrated as part of its future. The refurbishment and relocation of the Grade II Listed radial truss bell structure of Gasholder No. 4 offers a focal point as an accessible and inclusive space for resident and community use.
