It was with much delight that Lendlease’s and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ development, Barangaroo South, was awarded top honours at the Property Council of Australia’s national awards last night, winning the Australian Development of the Year award, Best Sustainable Development – New Buildings, Best Mixed Use Development, Best Workplace Project and People’s Choice awards.

One of the most prestigious property awards programs in Australia, these awards recognise outstanding achievements of high quality urban developments, showcasing superior examples of iconic projects across a broad range of design disciplines.

Barangaroo South is the largest piece of urban city-making in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics. It will eventually host 23,000 office workers, 2000 residents, a six-star hotel and 80-plus cafés, bars, restaurants and retail outlets across 535,000m2. The development has regenerated an entire downtown district, connecting the city with the harbour and enabling access to the waterfront for the first time. The three International Towers Sydney, also designed by RSHP, form the development’s centrepiece, opening out over Sydney Harbour on a fan-shaped grid, creating a new front door to the downtown area. This mixed waterfront development expands the CBD area, bringing together a new public headland park and ever-growing community.

Barangaroo South is due for completion in 2023 and is aiming to be the country’s first carbo- neutral project. Steps to achieve this include reducing the carbon intensity of the reinforced steel by 20 per cent, and recycling 99 per cent of construction waste. It is also one of only 17 precincts worldwide chosen to participate in the Climate Positive Development Programme. All three International Towers have received 6-Star Green Star ratings, as well as a WELL Platinum rating.

“This has been the most city-transforming project that our company has been involved in since the Pompidou Centre. Its dramatic early success in bringing the city of Sydney to the water is a testament to the huge efforts of an amazing team over the last ten years.” – Ivan Harbour, Senior Partner, RSHP

‘’Barangaroo South highlights the critical importance of design excellence and what it can bring to a development of this scale and significance. We are very proud to have been part of and to see the changes that have been made to Sydney’s CBD extending westwards on this precinct scale urban renewal. To the south, the old container port has now been replaced by a dense, dynamic and thriving new precinct on the waterfront which is well connected to the CBD. The scale of the undertaking and the timeline in which the outcome was delivered, its sustainability credentials, its success evident by its popularity in such a short time of its completion; is truly impressive. The forward-thinking approach to workplace, wellbeing and the formation of communities, challenges the traditional commercial workplace boundaries. Congratulations to all who have been on this amazing journey.’’ – Avtar Lotay, Managing Director, RSHP Office Australia

Explaining the reasons as to why Barangaroo South was awarded, PCA chief Ken Morrison stated, “Barangaroo South is a truly iconic international project which has recalibrated the way Australians think about precinct-scale urban renewal. It has transformed entire supply chains and challenged large tenants to embrace green business practices. It demonstrates how leadership in sustainability can exist alongside spectacular commercial success.”

“This award is recognition of the work of thousands of people who have brought this vision to life in this high quality, globally attractive, mixed-use precinct that is literally changing the face of Sydney and setting new global benchmarks in sustainable living," Rob Deck, Barangaroo South Managing Director, Lendlease
